What will I learn?

In a 2 to 3 hour workshop, we go from learning stance, how to adjust body language, how to think under pressure, and how to help the person who is escalated, start to slow their own reactions. When we think about de-escalation as first aid, it brings it into perspective. I've identified 5 steps that work across many of the different trainings I received in de-escalation, as a first responder, an emergency room worker, and as a 911 officer for ambulance.

I want help people both feel more confident to be out in public, and also to decrease their fear of those who are in crisis. Even to ask themselves, does this behaviour require intervention? Or am I endangering them?

Some people don't get to have their worst moments out of the public eye, or away from the workplace. Shelter is a gift. While the essentials of this are based in a hot dog vendor street environment, these techniques help in many different instances, whether it is with a co-worker, or neighbour, or family member, effective de-escalation technique will help both parties have the best outcome they can in a heated moment.

Creation of Workshop

This workshop was created at Theatre Passe Muraille in 2024. I enlisted the help of community leaders Donna Michelle St Bernard, and Kai Cheng Thom RSW. I wanted to make sure the methods resonated with people from many communities, and developed it with deaf people, wheelchair users, and people of all sizes and abilities. While I have my own techniques, I also have time for others to share what works for them, or what I may be missing as someone who has a disabled, white trans experience. We all have our ways of de-escalating and they are so helpful to know. We learn from the workshop and each other.
